Before you point out the obvious, this is not a backtracking of my previous post, but rather a clarification. TV is not bad for you, even if you do write for books and journals. I wanted to post the notable exceptions to the “No TV” rule alluded to in the last post. They are these (well, these are the exceptions that come immediately to mind.
- The Chaser (although tonight’s is the last episode, so that doesn’t count)
- Lost (although that’s not starting up again until February, so it doesn’t count either)
- 7.30 Report (although, I’m usually doing other things with this on in the background)
- House (although…no this one definitely counts)
What a crying shame that television standards in Australia are in such a state that we’re unlikely to produce a television drama anywhere near the craftsmanship and production values of the two American shows above.
Makes me wonder if I should be writing for television
Oh god…did I just say that?

If you were writing for television you’d be paying the mortgage but you’d also be wondering how many times you can write “Yes, Sir!” in one episode of Sea Patrol.
Australian TV – can induce vomiting in T-minus 5 seconds…
Qualifications to the “no TV” rule:
Does it count if you’re watching a TV series on DVD? ‘Cos technically that’s a DVD, and it was a “no TV’ not a “no DVD” rule. That said, now that ratings season has ended and we’re back to the King of Queens, may I recommend, on DVD:
*Heroes (stick with it)
*Deadwood (makes even this ex-private school girl blush)
*Weeds (enough said)
*The Farmer Wants a Wife (Just kidding. Sort of.)
Does the fact I don’t work full time nor have young children make this question incredibly lame? And does that fact that I have access to lots of free DVDs mean i am confronted daily with temptation and can thus be excused? Ae you already thinking by the time you stop prattling I could’ve written an entire Australian drama series?
Yes sir, yes, sir, yes, sir, yes sir yes sir yes sir
You’re right, it is soul destroying.
I think DVDs count. Possibly more because there’s the temptation to chuck on another episode rather than get your arse into gear. It’s like blogging or making a coffee.
Which reminds me…
Okay back now. Where was I?
Heroes? The reason i haven’t watched a single episode is because of my Lost addiction. I really don’t need any more of those. Same for Prison Break.
Deadwood? I don’t even know what that is. Does it make you blush out of embarrassment?
Weeds, yeah, haven’t watched. Sounds alright.
The farmer what? Did you make that up? If that’ a reality show and it’s Australian we’re in more trouble than I thought.
Bugger TV. Let’s all be snooty middle class twats and read books.
Oh wait…
