THE RAT raised its head off the floor and glared at me through its bulging bug eyes. It raised its top lip baring a row of immaculately polished teeth. I narrowed my eyes back at it. About the Author

Simon Groth’s fiction has been given the nod in many illustrious journals and awards including the Queensland Premier’s Literary Awards. He lives in Red Hill, Queensland surrounded by deadlines.

While he does own a few pieces, he himself was not personally responsible for assaying silver made in Copenhagen in the late nineteenth century. That was another Simon Groth.

‘These are stories that twist into the delightfully unexpected, populated with characters as familiar yet mysterious as your next door neighbours. Simon Groth is a writer to watch.’
— Venero Armanno

‘Simon Groth is a new and unique young voice on the literary scene. While other writers his age rely on being shock-jocks or sticking with the light and frothy stuff of chicklit, Simon is a dedicated storyteller whose narratives are always true but never ordinary. He dares to write in a female voice, roves back and forth across the political and social history of the last 80 years, and ties it all in to the world of today. His characters have the fallibility of real life and his stories are crafted to provide the reader with the joy of the unexpected. And through it all runs a vein of compassion that is never maudlin yet has the power to move.’ — Sue Gough

‘The real achievement of this manuscript is its vivid characterisation and dialogue. Here Today is an affecting and sometimes comic reflection on life, death and mortality that has an unexpected twist in the ending. Its serious themes are tempered by warmth and humour.’ — Judges’ Comments, Queensland Premier’s Literary Awards
