Thanks, Norbs. I'm more resigned to the fact that more companies are going to try this on, now the Apple have opened the door. What I hope is that the approach will fall flat and prevent iBooks from becoming the de facto standard they're shooting for. That depends more on readers than on authors (and from what I've seen, the fancy-pants iBooks are too bloated at the moment to take off properly with readers—1GB for 50 pages?).

Well written. I too was surprised by the EULA and it's impact, and the sheer audacity of Apple. But I'm more interested and thoughtful of your reaction, and willingness to resign to the fact. Sadly it's a common one, but don't stand for it, just use something else. It's easy, just author and publish your content using something open source, then given enough time, reformat your work in iAuthor and sell it. Yes it's extra work, but you get to stick it to the man, albeit a dead one (too soon?)

Thanks, Phillipa. My hope is that a comprehensive, open, and device agnostic market for ebooks is still possible, but that optimism is hard to maintain sometimes.

I read about this elsewhere but only really got the gist of it after reading your clear post. Thanks for that!
I'm not an Apple user and after numerous problems with an iPod have been scared away from their stuff, as a consequence I'm locked out of iBooks, (I'm already locked out of Kindle by owning a Sony ereader), and I really, really hate that. The more they try to get me in their walled garden the more I'll refuse. But I look longingly at all their ebooks I can't get anywhere else. When are these guys going to let customers buy what they want where they want? I suppose that's a fading concept, as archaic as two cobbers for a cent.
